| Entry-level
lessons: <back
to top> |
| Entry-level
lessons consist of a two-hour class that will begin
on the beach discussing the basics of surfing. This
discussion will include topics such as: |
| |
• |
The
aloha principles |
| |
• |
How to lie on the
board |
| |
• |
How to stand up |
| |
• |
How to position
your body on the board |
| |
• |
Where to stand
on the board |
| |
• |
Basic balancing
and turning skills |
| |
• |
How to move around
with the surfboard (on the beach and in the water),
and of course how to look COOL! |
| |
• |
Surfing etiquette |
| |
|
|
|
 |
| Surfing etiquette
is one of the most important things to learn and will
make the learning process a lot more enjoyable for you
and those around you. |
 |
| Students
then go out into the ocean where they are assisted as
they catch their first waves. This achieves two things,
it gets the students riding waves right away and also
puts big smiles on their faces. As the students progress,
they will start to paddle for waves on their own. |
 |
| The last
part of the lesson is spent on the beach going over the
student’s experience and giving them a lot of encouragement.
Surfing is a sport that is very challenging and takes
a lot of commitment to get good at, so the more you put
into it, the faster you will learn and the more you will
get out of it. |

Intermediate
level lessons: <back
to top>
Intermediate
lessons are two hours in length and include more in-depth
information on surfing skills such as:
• Paddling
• Standing
• Riding
• How to get through waves
• How to catch waves easier
• Two more scoops of aloha
Intermediate lessons
start with a talk on the beach. Then the students paddle
out and catch some waves while being monitored from
the beach. After about half an hour the instructor paddles
out and joins the students to go over their progress,
give them some pointers and also encouragement. The
lesson ends on the beach with a review of the instructors’
observations and discussing how the student is feeling
about their progress. It is important to be patient
with yourself. Getting comfortable in the water and
riding on a surfboard takes time and commitment. |

| Advanced
level lessons <back

|
| At
this level of the student’s development,
lessons are best done on a one on one basis. These
are some of the things that will be worked on:
|
| |
• |
Equipment
choices |
| |
• |
Finding your own
style |
| |
• |
Finding the flow
and staying in it |
| |
• |
Getting into more
challenging surf |
| |
• |
Ways to get more
out of your surfing experience |
The use of video is
a great tool at any level and can really speed up the
learning curve. So many things in surfing are very subtle
and by watching yourself over and over again you can
see what you are doing right and what you need to work
on. We will watch the tape together and I will share
my insights, answer questions and we will talk about
how you feel you are doing. Even at an advanced level
we need encouragement to help us improve.
Students are encouraged
to start building a video library of their surfing in
order to really see how they are improving and identify
areas to be worked on. When the student gets to this
level they can really get into their own style of riding
waves.
